Researchers state they have learnt the secret behind why some people are thin while others gain weight easily. The work of these scientists discloses freshly discovered genetic regions that are linked to being slim.
The research team says this backs the idea that for some people being skinny has more to do with inheriting a lucky pair of genes rather than having a perfect lifestyle or diet.
In the last decades, investigators have found a lot of genetic variations that result in people being overweight but there has been less focus on the people who are thin.
During this investigation, scientists contrasted samples of DNA from 1,600 healthy thin people – with a body mass index (BMI) of less than 18 – with those of very obese people and people of normal weight.
They also looked carefully at lifestyles of these people to rule out other variable that could affect the results such as eating disorders.
The results by scientists show that people who were obese had a set of genes linked to being overweight. While on the other hand, skinny people not only had less genes linked to obesity but also had deviations in genes that can be linked with healthy thinness.
