Sri Lanka defeated West Indies by 23 runs in a thrilling contest in the 39th match of the ICC World Cup 2019 at Chester-le-Street on Monday (July 1).
Chasing a huge target of 339, West Indies were restricted by Sri Lanka to 315 runs for nine wickets. Rihanna’s reaction when Chris Gayle got out, head back in disbelief, summed up the overall feeling of the game over at 71-3. But when Nicholas Pooran (108) and Fabian Allen (51) combined in an 83-run, seventh-wicket stand, the superstar singer from Barbados was back on her feet along with the crowd.
Allen joined Pooran with the total at 199-6 and scored his first ODI 50 from 30 balls, including six and seven boundaries before he became the third West Indian run out in the innings. Malinga again became the most successful bowler with all his experience and grabbed three wickets in cost of 55 runs.
“Pooran and (Fabian) Allen batted really well,” said Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne. “The two run-outs changed the game. “Angelo put his hands up and said ‘OK I will bowl two overs’. He has that confidence. He did the job. I don’t think he is going to bowl much more but if it is a crucial time he might bowl a couple of overs.”
Earlier, Chris Gayle flickered briefly but was caught for 35 from a steepling top edge by Jeffrey Vandersay off the bowling of Kasun Rajitha.
