Fifteen-year-old American Coco Gauff’s fairytale run at 2019 Wimbledon was ended by former world number one Simona Halep. Halep, the 27-year-old world number seven, defeated the American teenager 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Halep will face China’s Zhang Shuai in the quarterfinals. Before playing against Halep in the last 16, Gauff beat Venus Williams, Magdalena Rybarikova, and Polona Hercog.
Top seed Ashleigh Barty was knocked out of Wimbledon after losing against world number 55 Alison Riske. After beating two-time champion Petra Kvitova, British number one Johanna Konta also reached the quarterfinals.
World number eleven Serena Williams advanced to semifinals at Wimbledon after beating American Alison Riske on Tuesday (July 9). The 23-time Grand Slam champion beat the 55th seed Riske 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in 120 minutes to reach last four in women’s singles at Wimbledon in London.
