The beginning of this century has not been good for Pakistani cinema, and in its first decade (2001-2009) only a few notable films were presented. But in second decade (2010-2019) Pakistan Cinema was reborn and many marvelous Movies were made.
In this Special series of ACE News, ten years of Pakistan Cinema will be reviewed in different aspects from 2010 to 2019.
Here is the List of 10 films of the second decade of this century that have received critical acclaim, domestic and international awards, and gained popularity in terms of their story and production value.
10-Mah e Mir
Released in May 2016, the film tells the story of a young Jamal (Fahad Mustafa) who fall victim to Mir Taqi Mir’s era in the present era. It is a story of love, separation and rebellion. The main performers of the film include Fahad Mustafa, Eman Ali, Darshan Sahbai and Sanam Saeed.
Pakistan also nominated it for an Oscar Award in the Best Foreign Film field.Badr Ikram was the presenter of the film, while its director was Anjum Shahzad.
Mah-e-Mir also received two awards for best film and best music at the Dadasaheb Film Festival in India, while it was also awarded as the best story for the Guam Film Festival.
9-Na Maloom Afraad
It was the debut of the successful Pakistani cinema duo director Nabeel Qureshi and producer Fiza Ali Mirza, and it had the privilege of drawing the Pakistani people back to cinema.
The popularity of the film has been such that it remained in the cinema for more than nine months, while it left Shah Rukh Khan’s Bollywood film far behind in the meantime.
This film by Fahad Mustafa, Javed Sheikh, Mohsin Abbas Haider, Urwah Hussain, Kubra Khan and Mahvish Hayat played a key role in the revival of Pakistani cinema.Especially the item number ‘Bili’ became hit.
The film was screened on Eid ul Adha in October 2014 and it was at that time that the number of cinema screens in Pakistan was less than 100 so at the box office it could cross the Rs.14 crore but it Paved the way for upcoming films.
In this animated movie, lion the king of the jungle loses to a donkey, and then results in donkey’s government in the jungle with the help of clever fox.
The film has been popular among children and adults alike, and its music is well liked. Produced at a cost of just Rs 5 crore , the film managed to make a business of Rs 27 crore.
Shoaib Mansoor’s film was released in June 2011, with the lead actors include Mahira Khan, Atif Aslam, Hamima Malik and Eman Ali.
The story of the film is about Zainab (Hamima Malik) who is hanged for murdering his father. There are several layers to the story of the film, including transgender, poverty, and many other factors.
The film received four Lux Style Awards in Pakistan, while three won at the London Asian Film Festival and one at the SAARC Film Festival. Overall, the film was appreciated by critics and the public and it did business of over Rs 16 crore.
Released on the occasion of Independence Day in August 2015, ‘Moor’ ( Mother in Pashto) tells the story of a retired railway station master (Hameed Sheikh), a Balochistan resident who lives a life of poverty and oppression. His son is in Karachi to work of fake degrees.
The film showed that powerful people in the area were seizing railway lands and stealing railway tracks and other goods in several areas of Balochistan under political pressure.
The film was written by renowned director Jami and presented by Nadeem Mandiwala himself. The main characters of the film include Hameed Sheikh, Samiya Mumtaz, Neer Ejaz and Sonia Hussein.
The film was widely praised by critics until it received two Lux Style Award for Best Film and Best Director in Pakistan. It was also sent by Pakistan for an Oscar nomination.
5-Teefa In trouble
Basically, the film was an action comedy, mostly filmed in Poland. This is Ali Zafar’s first film in Pakistan with Maya Ali appearing as a heroine. It was also Maya Ali’s debut. This Picture is also honored that despite not being released on Eid or any other major occasion, he was not only very successful but also grossed Rs 50 crore at the box office by grossing it both nationally and globally.
The film was produced by Ali Zafar himself while his director was Ahsan Rahim. Apart from being full of action comedy and romance, his music was well liked, especially his song ‘Main Itom Number’ became very popular.
Released in March 2019, this action crime thriller movie of Manasha Pasha and Ahmed Ali Akbar has won several National and international awards and it was nominated for an Oscar nomination by Pakistan.
The story of Film is based on revenge when Aaliyah (Mansha Pasha )’s husband falls victim to a target kill on a street in Karachi, after which she goes off to find her killers with the help of a taxi driver (Ahmad Ali Akbar).
The main cast of the film also includes Saleem Miraj and Kashif Farooqi. The screenplay of ‘’Laal Kabootar’’ was written by Ali Abbas Naqvi while it was directed by Kamal Khan and presented by Kamal Cheema and Hania Cheema under the banner of Nahar Ghar Films.
‘Laal Kabootar’ has so far bagged several awards at the South Asia Film Festival in the United States and Canada.
The film was the debut of director Asim Abbasi and he wrote it himself. Although the film did a little above Rs 12 crore at the box office, it got extraordinary accolades.
Love, the feeling of passing time, this movie makes a lot of sense. It was released in March 2018 at the International Film Festival in Pakistan.
Its main characters include Amna Sheikh, Sanam Saeed, Adnan Malik and Beau Zafar. The film was also nominated for an Oscar Award by Pakistan, while it also received the Lux Style Award for Best Film.
2-Punjab Nahi Jaungi
Released on the occasion of Eid ul Adha in September 2017, the film is a romance story with a slight degree of humor.
Mahesh Hayat and Humayun Saeed are the main characters, but critics say that this is actually Mahesh Hayat’s film.
The film has a huge cast including Sohail Ahmed, Saba Hameed, Azfar Rehman, Ahmed Ali Butt, Urwa Hussain and Waseem Abbas.
The story of ‘Punjab will not go’ was written by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar, while Nadeem Baig directed it. The film grossed over Rs 50 crore at the box office.
1-Actor in Law
Released on the occasion of Eid ul Adha in September 2016, the film was a social comedy in which the main characters were Fahad Mustafa and Mahvish Hayat. Legend Indian Actor Om Puri played a vital role in film.
The story of the film is by Shaan Mirza, who wants to be an actor, but by becoming a lawyer in the throes of a situation, he gets popular by fighting public affairs. The story of the film was written jointly by Faiza Ali Mirza and Nabil Qureshi while Nabil Qureshi was the director. The producer of the film was Fizza Ali Mirza
The story of ‘Actor in LAW’ was on a difficult subject and making interesting but somewhat hilarious films was nevertheless a precise task that Fiza and Nabeel played gracefully, while making the film the best actor, best director and best. There were three Lux Style Awards along with songs.
