Plant species are used as herbal medicines and are contributing in the development of modern medicine. Natural composites from medicinal plants hold great promise for the detection and advancement of novel pharmaceuticals in a diverse human ailments1.
Plectranthus species (Spur flowers) are used as traditional medicine in Saudi Arabia economically. They possess several biological activities effective for primary health care system2.
Coleus forskohlii (C. forskohlii ) and Plectranthus barbatus (P. barbatus) are two important medicinal plants of Saudi Arabia. Phytochemical analysis exhibited presence of terpenoids, tannins, reducing sugars, alkaloids and flavonoids (polyphenolic compounds). These polyphenols are known by health promoting properties such as antioxidant, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anti-cancer properties3.
Saudi Scientists conducted a study in which they determined the phenolic acids contents, antitumor, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of traditional medicinal plants4.
In this study the phenolic acids were detected by HPLC (High Profile Liquid Chromatography), antioxidant activity determined by DPPH scavenging system. Antitumor activity was performed by antioxidant enzymes catalase, polyphenol-oxidase and peroxidase enzymes were estimated in plant extracts. Poisoned food technique and disc diffusion method for antifungal and antibacterial assay were used respectively.
The HPLC analysis results revealed Coleus forskolii and Plactranthus barbatus extracts indicated the presence of different types of phenolic acids. Among other phenolic acids the highest concentration found was of Ferulic acid and gallic acids. Both plants have different antioxidant enzymes which include catalase, polyphenol-oxidase and peroxidase enzymes.
A promising antitumor effect was exhibited by both the plants. Coleus forskohlii has antibacterial activities against S. aureus, E. coli and S. typhi but not P. barbatus has. The weak antifungal activity was observed with using C. forskohlii and P. barbatus extracts.
