The commander of US central command General Kenneth Mackenzie arrived here in Islamabad to discuss various issues related to regional security and peace. General Mackenzie reached Islamabad with 17-member delegation via special plane at Noor Khan airbase.
The US high-level delegation will meet with high level civil and military leadership as the international experts are terming the visit vital in the region’s current situation. The sources said that the US general’s visit to Pakistan, amid rising tension between Pakistan and Indian, has a significant importance.
Earlier, during Prime Minister Imran Khan’s US visit, the United States President Donald Trump vowed that the US ready to play a role as a mediator to solve the long-standing issue of Kashmir and to normalize Pak-India relations, a move that would signal a shift in longstanding US policy that the issue must be solved bilaterally.
But later Trump took a big u-turn on his mediation offer and said that India and Pakistan could handle their dispute over Kashmir on their own, but he was there should they need him. He discussed the issue on the sidelines of a G7 summit in France with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who withdrew autonomy for the state of Jammu and Kashmir on fifth of this month.
