Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday (Dec 31) reserved its verdict on the plea challenging PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif’s appointment as the chairman of Public Accounts Committee (PAC). As the hearing went underway the lawyer of the petitioner argued that appointing Shehbaz Sharif as chairman of PAC is like “ridiculing the constitution”, thus IHC should dismiss the Opposition Leader of the National Assembly from the top post of PAC.
IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah remarked that Shehbaz Sharif is innocent until the case is proved against him in the court. “It is an internal matter of the parliament. The constitution calls for assuring supremacy of the constitution,” he remarked.”
Earlier Advocate Azhar Siddiqui had filed a petition in Lahore High Court, that challenged the appointment of Shehbaz Sharif as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The PML-N leader is currently under the custody of NAB in connection to corruption cases Shahbaz Sharif was elected chairman of the Public Accounts Committee unopposed on December 21 as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government conceded the chairmanship of PAC to Shehbaz almost three months after a stalemate over the key position. His name was proposed by PMLN lawmaker Rohail Ashghar and endorsed by Mushahid Hussain Syed during the meeting of the parliamentary body.
