Veteran German tenor turned conductor Peter Schreier has died aged 84 after a long illness secretary in his beloved home city of Dresden, his secretary said adding that his family had initially requested privacy.
Schreier trained in former East Germany, he performed in more than 60 operatic roles from New York to Milan to Salzburg until retirement.
Although Schreier retired from opera at age 65 in 2000 because he felt too old to play young lovers on stage, he continued to give “Lieder” or song recitals for a few more years, then focused on teaching and leading until his health problems have become too serious.
Schreier suffered from back and hip problems and had diabetes, according to German media.
