U.S agronomists estimate that if wheat is grown in a ten-story field, wheat production can be increased by 200 to 600 times compared to conventional agriculture. It should be noted that this new field of agriculture is called “vertical farming” in which instead of the open sky in a building, by planting different crops floor by floor, get higher yields on less area.
Given the nutritional value of wheat, Dr. Paul Gaudier, a professor of botany at Princeton University, New Jersey, calculated that if wheat was grown in a ten-story field using the same technique of vertical cultivation, it would be the most suitable. How much can wheat production be increased?
A careful estimate revealed that in such a case the yield of wheat per hectare would be from 700 tons to 1940 tons. The current average wheat production is about 3.5 tons per hectare, compared to which the expected rate is really high. If the technology of vertical cultivation is introduced in Pakistan, only 30,000 hectares of land will be able to meet all the needs of wheat in Pakistan, while other food crops can be grown in large quantities using a small area.
