The news, speculations and rumors are circling rounds in political and journalist circles in Islamabad regarding the deal with Sharif family. Where ever one goes in federal capital Islamabad the possible deal is the talk of the town. Both the PTI government and PML-N are denying that any deal has been made to rescue Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif from current troubles.
According to my sources within the political circles and in the real powers of this country, the deal has already been finalised with Sharif family. According to the details, Nawaz Sharif will be allowed to leave the country after getting bail from Islamabad High Court on medical grounds. Maryam Nawaz might also accompany him to London for his medical treatment.
Nawaz Sharif, who has been serving prison term after he was found guilty by an accountability court in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference in December last year, was shifted to Lahore’s Services Hospital from the Kot Lakhpat prison for a week.
My talks to member of medical board treating the former prime minister in Services hospital revealed that Nawaz Sharif needs medical treatment. He said that Nawaz Sharif is facing serious health issues and needs regular medical treatment. Nawaz Sharif also needs treatment for his ailing kidneys and diabetes.
Nawaz Sharif has already shifted to Jinnah hospital for medical treatment. Shahbaz Sharif has been released on bail. Hamza Shahbaz was allowed to go abroad. The continued silence of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz all indicates in the direction of a compromise or deal.
The media cell that was working under the direct supervision and guidance of Maryam Nawaz has long been silent. The strong and aggressive tweets against establishment are no more there. The strong narrative that was built before the general elections is also absent.
There is nothing new in this deal or compromise. Pakistani history is full of compromises and political deals. Compromises were made between political forces and with establishment. The history of Pakistani politics landscape is awash with ‘behind the scenes’ deals between the establishment and politicians that has produced leaders, governments, and truces and saved the corrupt. So the history will repeat itself once again.
Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz will not play leading political role and will remain silent for a period. Both are mostly remained silent since their bail in Avenfield case from Islamabad. According to sources, Nawaz Sharif still is insisting to get a role for his daughter. Nawaz Sharif’s strategy was to secure the political role for his political heir Maryam Nawaz.
She might be forced to remain on sidelines for next few years before resuming her leading political role. Both Nawaz Sharif and Maryam are on the bail and main case has yet to be decided by Islamabad High Court. So she will have to wait till the final decision of her case.
Shahbaz Sharif will take over the PML-N as party head and will be allowed to play his political role. Shahbaz Sharif has always been a trusted man of establishment and he will continue to play a compromising role. He is in trouble because he refuses to ditch his elder brother. In his own style, he stood firmly with his brother.
Now it seems that Nawaz Sharif has finally accepted the fact that Shahbaz Sharif is the only best available option to save the sinking ship of Sharif family and PML-N. He has allowed the Shahbaz Sharif to steer the ship out of rough waters.
The pressure will keep mounting on the PML-N until Nawaz Sharif is completely sidelined and the party comes under Shehbaz Sharif’s control. The pressure will be kept on Shahbaz Sharif to fulfill his commitments. He will not get free hand immediately but could be allowed to play his political role more openly. PML-N will remain a dominating political force in Punjab.
Shahbaz Sharif knows that he needs Nawaz Sharif’s political backing and support to fully control the PML-N. He is a smart political player and maneuverer. He has so far played his cards smartly and intelligently. He is not a hawk but a pragmatic.
All those who are refuting the existing of such a deal or compromise should remind themselves about the deal made by Sharifs in December 2000 and left for Saudi Arabia. The situation will become clear in next few months as much dust will be settled.
