World Autism Awareness Day is being observed today (April 2) with the theme of “Assistive Technologies, Active Participation.” The day is meant to raise awareness about autism, a complex neurological condition, which causes problems with language and communication skills.
Autism is a complex neurobehavioral condition that includes impairments in social interaction and developmental language and communication skills combined with rigid, repetitive behaviors. Because of the range of symptoms, this condition is now called autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Characteristics and symptoms
No specific test can diagnose autism. Instead, doctors reach a diagnosis through parental reports of behavior, observation, and by ruling out other conditions.
The causes of autism are currently not known, but significant numbers of studies are underway with a view to learning how it develops.
There is no uniform treatment for autism, as every person with the condition presents differently. Therapies and strategies are available for managing the health issues that often accompany autism. These issues can include epilepsy, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and sleep disturbances.
