Soon after Transparency International released its much anticipated global report on the 2019 Corruption Perception Index (CPI), in which Pakistan ranked as more corrupt than last year, opposition leaders slammed Prime Minister Imran Khan led PTI government for misleading nation and for playing with emotions of the people.
According to report, Pakistan was ranked 130 out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2019, according to a report released by Transparency International (TI), an international non-governmental organization based in Berlin.
Its worth mentioning here that the country scored 32/100 on the CPI in 2018 and 32/100 in 2017. Although the score of Pakistan on the index has not changed at all compared to the past year, the changes in the CPI score of other countries on the list resulted in Pakistan falling down the ranking.
However, opposition leaders have declared the annual report of Transparency International as deeds of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Shabaz Terms PM Khan as Worst Ruler in History
Responding to Transparency International’s CPI annual report, Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif said that the incumbent government and Prime Minister Imran Khan as the worst ruler in the history.
“For a year and a half, Imran Khan and his flattering group kept making only the noise of thieves and bandits,” he added. He said that corruption has soared in Pakistan whereas things were moving towards progress in former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s tenure.
Speaking to the journalists, Shehbaz Sharif also that the previous government was better in terms of transparency as corruption had a low rate despite billions of trillions of projects. “Nawaz Sharif was taking country towards forward with transparency,” he added.
Hamza Shehbaz Takes a Dig at PTI
Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz while talking to media outside the Punjab Assembly termed the government as the most corrupt.
He said that the burden of utility bills had been shifted onto the masses. “The people are striving for flour. It will be the great achievement if the PTI government performed a half of the PML-N government,” he said. Hamza Shehbaz said that the in-house change is a democratic process. “The PML-N’s doors are open,” he said.
Report is Proof of Failure ‘Naya Pakistan’
PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the report is a proof of the failure of ‘New Pakistan Project’. “If Imran Khan has some moral courage, he should now say the country is corrupt because the rulers are thieves,” she said.
“The report has confirmed that the level and amount of corruption committed by Imran Khan’s government in the past 16 months is more than any government in the entire past decade.” This report, she said, was a “slap in the face” of the government as it had exposed all its lies about anti-corruption measures and good governance.
Sherry Rehman Criticizes PM Imran
PPP Senator Sherry Rehman said that the Transparency International report is a charge-sheet against the government. “Imran Khan had leveled allegations against the previous governments, but Transparency International exposed the accountability government,” she said.
On the other hand, Sindh Minister for Information Saeed Ghani said that Transparency International report had exposed the claims of Imran Khan. “It proves that the country had moved backward during one and a half years,” he said.
Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Sirajul Haq said that the government has broken the record of corruption. “TI is an independent institution. The annual report about corruption is alarming. According to the report, Rs 6.5 million, out of an Rs 10 million project, go waste in corruption.”
