The Indian cricket team head coach, Gautam Gambhir, was overruled on two key decisions for the Champions Trophy 2025 team selection, as per a report. It was said that a disagreement led to a lengthy meeting between Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar ahead of the squad announcement. One point of contention was the vice-captaincy, where Gambhir favored Hardik Pandya, but both Rohit and Agarkar backed Shubman Gill. The second issue was the wicketkeeper slot, with Gambhir supporting Sanju Samson, but Rishabh Pant was ultimately chosen, thanks to support from Rohit and Agarkar.

Meanwhile, Ajit Agarkar mentioned on Saturday that Jasprit Bumrah might not be fit for the first two ODIs against England. This led to the inclusion of Harshit Rana as a replacement, with the team awaiting an update from the medical staff about Bumrah’s condition. Despite his fitness concerns, Bumrah was named in the squad for the Champions Trophy, which follows the three-match series against England.

Agarkar shared that Bumrah had been instructed to rest for five weeks, meaning he will miss the first two ODIs against England. The medical team is expected to provide more details on his fitness by early February. Bumrah had experienced a back spasm after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and underwent scans for further evaluation.

In the press conference, Agarkar emphasized that it would be better for the medical department to provide updates on Bumrah's condition, and they are hopeful he will recover soon. The final squad for the Champions Trophy is due by February 11, with India set to play three ODIs against England on February 6, 9, and 12, before the tournament kicks off on February 19.
