Instagram has introduced a series of updates to enhance user experience, including a longer Reels duration, a refreshed profile layout, and a new way to discover videos liked by friends. The platform has also announced a new video editing app called "Edits." Here’s a breakdown of the changes:
Longer Reels Duration
Instagram is now allowing users to upload Reels up to three minutes in length, an extension that comes in response to feedback from users who felt the previous 90-second limit was too brief. While Instagram already supports longer videos, these were categorized as standard posts rather than Reels.
Updated Profile Grids
In an update shared via Instagram Stories, the platform’s head, Adam Mosseri, revealed that profile grids will now show content as rectangles instead of squares. This change reflects the fact that most Instagram photos and videos are vertical, and the square grid previously cropped them too much. The new format will ensure a better display of photos and videos in their original form.
New Section for Liked Reels
Instagram is also adding a dedicated section to the Reels tab, where users can see videos that their friends have liked or commented on. This feature will help users connect with others by making it easier to start conversations around content that’s being shared. Initially, this update will be available in select countries, with plans to roll it out globally later.
Instagram Edits: A New Video Editing App
Instagram has launched a new video editing app called "Edits." This app offers a wide range of creative tools, including a section for inspiration and idea tracking, enhanced video quality, and the ability to share drafts. Users will also be able to see how their videos are performing on Instagram. While the app is not yet available on Android devices, it can be pre-registered on the Apple App Store, with a release date set for March 13.
