OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has finalized a new version of its reasoning AI model, o3 mini, and plans to launch it in the next few weeks, according to CEO Sam Altman. The company has taken user feedback into account and will be releasing both the application programming interface (API) and ChatGPT at the same time, Altman shared in a post on X.

In December, OpenAI revealed that it was testing its reasoning AI models, o3 and o3 mini, marking a new phase in its competition with other companies, like Google, in the race to develop more advanced AI models capable of solving complex problems.

OpenAI had originally intended to release o3 mini by the end of January, with the full o3 model following soon after. These more powerful language models aim to surpass existing ones, attracting both new users and investors.

Back in September 2024, the company introduced its o1 AI models, designed to handle more complex queries. These models excel in tasks such as science, coding, and math, marking a significant improvement in their ability to reason through difficult problems. The upcoming o3 and o3 mini models are expected to offer even greater capabilities than the o1 models.

Earlier this week, OpenAI announced the introduction of a new beta feature, Tasks, for ChatGPT, signaling its move into the virtual assistant market to compete with Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 sparked a wave of investment in AI, and the company’s recent developments helped it secure a $6.6 billion funding round in October.
