Virat Kohli, the renowned Indian batter, has reached a new low in the ICC Test batting rankings after a tough performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
In 2018, Kohli set a record for the highest-ever rating by an Indian in Test cricket, earning 937 points. He held the top spot in the Test rankings for about 13 months before slipping to second place in 2019.
In the years that followed, his position in the rankings continued to decline, and after the recent series against Australia, he reached his lowest ranking in nearly 12 years. Kohli's decline further intensified after missing the home Test series against England in 2024, followed by poor performances in Bangladesh and New Zealand in 2024. As a result, Kohli dropped to 22nd place, marking his lowest ranking since 2014.
The first positions update of 2025 saw Kohli dropping out of the top 25 for the first time in 12 years. After his disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Kohli now stands at 27th place, marking his first time outside the top 25 since December 2012.
Kohli had a ordinary series in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which was won by Australia 3-1. Over five matches, Kohli managed only 190 runs from nine innings, with an average of 23.75 and a strike rate of 47.98. His struggles against deliveries outside the off-stump drew sharp criticism. Notably, Kohli was dismissed behind the wicket eight times, four of those by Scott Boland.
